5 Tips To Clean Mattress After A Bedwetting Accident

We’ve all experienced the awful sensation that follows discovering an accident on a mattress. Nevertheless, you must keep in mind that accidents do happen and that your child is not to blame for bedwetting. If your child had a bedwetting incident that resulted in a wet mattress, you likely performed the first action after cleaning them up: removing the sheets and washing them. It’s crucial to understand the right way to clean a child’s mattress of pee. To prevent mattress stains and odours from lingering, you must address the issue immediately.

Methods to clean urine from mattress

Strip the bedding

Before you do anything else, strip your mattress and throw your bedding as soon as you can into the washing machine. Urine stains can set, therefore it’s important to throw your sheets and comforter in the washer as soon as possible. Add a cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle and repeat the washing process if the pee stain or odour persists after washing your bedding. You can also hire a reputed mattress cleaning company for a thorough cleaning.

Get rid of excess

Soaking up extra liquid from the mattress is the next step. The residual pee off of a mattress should be blotted with a dry cloth to get rid of as much of the liquid as you can. Blot with cloths as you continue to minimize the urine odour with a little water. One or more additional towels would be required for this. Scrubbing the area is not recommended since it will force the liquid further into the mattress’s fabric, making it more difficult to remove completely.

Apply vinegar

Instead of using expensive cleaning supplies, just use white vinegar and warm water from your kitchen. Apply it to your mattress with a spray bottle after combining it 50/50. Then use a towel to wipe the mattress once more. If the affected area is a bigger spot, you might have to repeat this procedure. Of course, vinegar has a strong smell as well, so it may be a good idea to open a window or turn on a ceiling fan.

Sprinkle baking soda

After you’ve cleaned the area, add some baking soda. Leaving it there overnight will allow the mattress to dry completely (aim for about 10 hours). The following day, vacuum the baking soda. Your child’s mattress should no longer smell of urine after doing this. Repeat the procedure if you can still smell the urine after one treatment.

Hydrogen peroxide

Try a different cleaning solution if you need to remove a pee stain from a mattress that has been there for some time. Combine 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide, 3 tablespoons of baking soda, and a few drops of dishwashing liquid (the kind for your sink, not a dishwasher). Apply the mixture liberally to the stain using a spray bottle, then let it sit until it dries. When it’s ready, you’ll notice that the baking soda has dried on top. Then just vacuum it away.
